GREAT STAFF MANAGEMENT ENSURES YOUR STAFF DELIVER FOR YOU

Finding and keeping the best people is crucial to business success

The majority of small businesses in New Zealand, over 70% in fact, have no employees in their business, and have no intention of employing staff. This may well be you. But if you are in the other 30% or your business is growing, you will need different skills, and you will need more people to do the work you can’t do. So, you will need to employ staff.

There are a few realities many small business owners fail to accept when taking on staff.

Firstly, your staff are not you!!

They will not have the same passion for the business as you, are unlikely to want to do as many hours as you and are unlikely to be thinking about the business every day like you will. They will have their own motivations, goals and aspirations and these won't be the same as yours. You may well have to pay them a lot more than you can pay yourself to get them and keep them.

Getting and keeping the right staff

If you get to know your staff, what motivates them, and how to care for them, you can build invaluable relationships that can be immensely rewarding.

But you need to understand what type of people you need to help you run your business. You need to find the best people, select them and bring them into your business.

If they don’t work out, you need to do something as ignoring staff issues can prove disastrous. Most of us in small business struggle dealing with difficult staff issues - they can be tough. No one enjoys this but it must be done and done well.

We can help you find ways to get the best staff, keep them and where things aren’t going to plan, put things in place to deal with this.

Leadership and staff management

Sadly, many of the people who start a business, and then grow that business are not aware of what it takes to lead the people that delivered their success. Leadership is fundamental to staff management. Leadership is perhaps the most written about business topic, yet good leadership in the business world is all too rare.

At the most basic level the trait of good leadership is summed up in the following statement:

Know Yourself - Accept Yourself - Forget Yourself

If you want to strengthen your leadership abilities it is first about knowing yourself, your personality, your strengths, your limitations. It’s about knowing what motivates you, what stresses you, and how you make decisions.

You are who you are. It is now time to accept that and not torture yourself about aspiring to be someone you are not.

Now comes the hard part in leadership and staff management.  We have to forget about our needs and focus on what is best for our staff and our business. Our own needs come last.
